West

EQUUS
February 2003
by Steven Berkoff
Directed by Derek Doddington

University Theatre, Arts Centre, Christchurch

If you see anything on stage this weekend, see WEST. Steven Berkoff’s gritty drama of London’s gangland grips tightly to its brutally uncompromising setting and a brooding Dickensian cast of characters. The various components are cemented together by Berkoff’s dazzling flow of language – the argot of the seedy streets and lives. In WEST, words become a dramatic tour de force. Directed with Panache by Derek Doddington, the play continually twitches and jumps with a nervous energy which makes it a richly satisfying theatrical experience. Quite simply, superb.
